Robertson Barracks was first established as a military base during the Second World War and has been home to the 1st of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards (nicknamed The Welsh Cavalry) since 2015.
The 165 hectare site is located north of Dereham in the heart of the Norfolk countryside, with the villages of Swanton Morley and Hoe to the south of the site and Worthing to the north.

The barracks today
The site is made up of three main areas: the former airfield, the residential area, and the technical site. Together, these areas typically supports around 400 military personnel and civilian staff.
The former airfield has been used by the Army since the mid-1990s as a training area. It includes areas of dense woodland around its edges, which have been planted and managed to support training activities.
The residential area is where Service Family Accommodation is located, providing homes for military families.
The technical site contains a range of operational buildings, including hangars and garages, mess facilities, Single Living Accommodation (SLA), medical buildings, sports and recreational facilities and other support services.
The site also has a rich history, reflected in several important heritage features. These include three Picket Hamilton Forts and a Grade II listed Control Tower, which serve as reminders of the site’s past.
