The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is investing around £5 billion to create a modern, sustainable estate that meets the needs of the Armed Forces now and into the future. As part of this programme, Robertson Barracks has been identified as surplus to military requirements and is expected to close in 2031.

What happens next?

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and is responsible for managing the Ministry of Defence estate. The DIO is leading the long-term planning for Robertson Barracks. Working closely with Breckland District Council, local parish councils and the community, the DIO will develop a masterplan that explores how the site could evolve once military use comes to an end.

Technical studies are now underway to understand the opportunities and constraints across the site and help ensure that any future proposals are carefully planned, sustainable and informed by evidence.

The DIO has appointed a professional team of consultants to look at the opportunity and to undertake detailed feasibility studies on future options for Robertson Barracks.

What is a masterplan?

A masterplan is a long-term plan that shows how a site could be developed over time. It provides an overall vision and framework for where homes, buildings, roads, green spaces and community facilities could be located.
