As Robertson Barracks approaches the end of its military use, planning is beginning for what comes next. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is exploring how the site could continue to make a positive contribution to Norfolk for generations to come.

How is the site being assessed?

Detailed technical studies covering areas such as transport, infrastructure, heritage, ecology and flood risk will help to ensure that any future proposals are carefully planned, sustainable and informed by evidence.

They will consider a range of factors, including:

• How existing buildings, infrastructure and open spaces could support new homes, jobs and other sustainable uses.
• Transport and access, including opportunities to improve walking, cycling and other sustainable travel connections.
• Protecting and enhancing the site’s heritage, landscape and biodiversity.
• Managing flood risk and ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place.
• The most appropriate scale and type of development, informed by technical evidence, planning policy and community feedback.

As plans develop, local people will have opportunities to learn more, ask questions and share their views. Community feedback will play an important role in shaping the future of the site.

What could the future look like?

While no decisions have yet been made, the opportunity at Robertson Barracks could help to create a vibrant new rural community that builds on the site’s existing sense of place and complements neighbouring villages. Ideas for the site are at an early stage and will continue to evolve as technical work progresses and feedback is received from the community. These include:

• Homes: a mix of high-quality homes, including affordable homes, designed to create a balanced and inclusive community.
• New jobs and employment opportunities: including uses that support agriculture, tourism and the rural economy.
• Community facilities: a village shop, public open space and new walking and cycling connections.
• Employment uses and local services: opportunities to reuse existing buildings where appropriate for community or employment uses.
• New and enhanced green spaces: supporting biodiversity, recreation and opportunities to enjoy the natural environment.
• Improved access: helping to connect neighbouring villages and open up areas that are currently inaccessible.
• Heritage: protecting and celebrating the site’s military heritage, working with the local community to preserve its unique history.

How is the future of the site being planned?

Breckland District Council is reviewing and updating its Local Plan, which will guide how future development is brought forward across the district, including where new homes, employment, community facilities and green spaces should be located.

Robertson Barracks has been identified as one of three potential strategic sites being considered through this process, which will help determine whether Robertson Barracks is an appropriate location for future development and establish the planning framework for the site.

Local Government Reorganisation is also taking place across Norfolk. As plans progress, they will continue to align with the evolving Local Plan and the priorities of both Breckland District Council and, in time, any future replacement Council.
